Durham, NC, 1993

I've had this photo sitting on my desk for a few months meaning to post it here because it's one of my favorite photos of myself, which is a limited set, to say the least. I don't know who took it--perhaps Geeta?--but it's about an hour after the Science & Math graduation ceremony. I'd turned 18 two days earlier and I'm still wearing my amazing birthday dress with pom-pom fringe. I'm standing in my empty room, all teary red-eyed, thinking, "what now?"

But this photo feels particularly appropriate for this exact moment in my life. I'm making another big life change, and this one especially feels like a leap of faith. I'm moving away from SF for good (at least for as far as I can see) and headed down to Johannesburg for 6 months. After that, I'm not quite sure. I've laid the groundwork for some future plans, but it all remains unwritten. To be honest, Jo'burg scares the daylights out of me, but I look forward to getting over that and finding my own daily life in that mad place.

I definitely plan to post updates about my adventures in this space. I'm even finally buying a digital camera for the journey, a milestone that surely is presaged in some later passages of Revelations, God help us all. Part of why I have been so neglectful of this site in recent months has been a sorry case of general malaise, so surely a good shock to the system is in order. Happy holidays to you all and stay tuned!
